A search in the sun
Sam Wilson, The 2nd of August, 2015

Many employers, and recruiters, are wary of advertising vacancies through the month of August as they feel it will be a wasted effort. In the past, many recruitment sites suffered a significant drop in traffic as users were often sunning themselves somewhere, enjoying a well-deserved break.

There is now evidence to suggest that recruiters needn’t be so cautious. In 2014, traffic to Jobsgopublic.com in August saw a 38% rise on 2013. Employers who advertised during this time were able to take advantage of an active audience with fewer vacancies to choose from as many others took caution.

This rise in summer traffic is yet another addition of recent observations of the changes in job seeker behaviour. This is evidenced in the increased seasonal activity, at the very least in part due to the rise in mobile use which allows jobseekers to remain active even whilst abroad. 45% of Jobsgopublic traffic now comes from mobile devices, considering that this figure was just 5% in 2011 it goes to show that mobile currently plays a big part in the contemporary job search and is clearly set to play a huge part in the future.

The increase in general online activity will be a massively contributing factor to increased candidate traffic. Recent studies have uncovered the phenomenon of FOBO (Fear Of Being Offline), this highlights the increasing numbers of people who fear missing out on significant events or news by being away from a computer, smart phone or tablet for too long. One study found that 72% of respondents wouldn’t think of leaving the house without their smart phone. As a result, potential candidates are spending more of their time online and subsequently more time on their job search.

Another study has discovered that up to 52% of people check their emails whilst on holiday. With the Jobsgopublic Jobs by Email service delivering vacancies directly to candidates’ inboxes, this becomes an incredibly effective way of communicating with candidates even when they aren’t actively job seeking.

Jobsgopublic are expecting to see even higher levels of traffic this summer and are urging employers to take advantage of this and advertise their vacancies throughout the summer months.

If the rise in summertime traffic wasn’t enticing enough, Jobsgopublic have put together 3 special offers to run throughout August which include a range of on-site enhancements and attraction methods designed to target active and passive jobseekers alike.

“We genuinely believe that there is a very real opportunity for employers to take advantage of the significant rise in traffic that we have observed during summer months in recent years. Utilising a combination of attraction methods during this time will allow employers to stand out from the crowd and secure high calibre candidates at a point where others have exercised unnecessary caution.” – Miles Skelton, Managing Director
